The surface waters of the sea are full of microscopic phytoplankton (one cell drifting plants) which convert energy from the sun and the elements extracted from the water into precious substances necessary for life. This wondrous natural reaction is known as photosynthesis. The diverse group of plankton organisms are collectively known as microalgae. The most well known of the algae phytoplankton are diatoms, which inhabit nutrient-rich cold waters such as in British Columbia, Canada.

Microalgae are the basis of the food web and consist of single cell microscopic algae. Phytoplankton are bio diverse organisms varying in shape and size.
